Wellbeing

The wellbeing of our students is the core of everything that we do. We want every student to feel safe, valued and connected, knowing they belong to a caring school community. Our approach is grounded in proven practices that help children build confidence, develop friendships and engage deeply in their learning. When students feel supported and happy at school, they are free to succeed, grow and thrive.

Inclusive Practice

In our school, inclusion means every child feels welcome, respected and supported. We celebrate diversity and ensure that teaching and learning programs are accessible to all students, regardless of their background or needs. Through flexible programs, inclusive adjustments, personalised support, and a strong focus on belonging, we create a learning environment where every student can participate, achieve their potential, and thrive as part of our school community.

Restorative Behaviour Management

Our Behaviour Support Management Plan is built on the principles of restorative practice. This approach focuses on building strong relationships, repairing harm, and helping students learn from their choices. We guide children to take responsibility, reflect on their actions, and restore trust within the school community. Our school has clear expectations for behaviour and our teachers provide opportunities for students to develop self-regulation and resilience.

Transitions

At Balgowlah North Public School, we focus on positive transitions—from early childhood into Kindergarten, from year to year, and from primary to high school. Each transition is an opportunity to build confidence, connection, and success.

We work closely with local preschools to ensure our youngest students feel welcomed and ready to thrive. Teachers collaborate across year levels, sharing insights to support every child’s learning journey.

At the end of each year, we run tailored transition programs, especially for students with Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) or emotional or behavioural needs. Teachers observe and connect with students they will teach next year, fostering familiarity and trust.

As students move to high school, we continue our support, working with local schools and learning teams to ensure a smooth and successful transition academically, socially, and emotionally.

UR Strong

The URSTRONG program is an internationally recognised wellbeing program that helps children build positive friendships and develop strong social-emotional skills. It gives students a common language to talk about their friendships, manage conflict in healthy ways, and recognise what makes a safe, respectful relationship. Through fun, interactive lessons, children learn how to:

Positive Behaviour for learning

At our school, we use the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program to create a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment. PBL teaches and reinforces positive behaviours, helping students understand expectations, build strong relationships, and make good choices. By celebrating achievements and supporting every child, PBL helps students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically.

Our school’s PBL expectations are Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible.

Social Skills Development Groups

We run social skills groups to give students structured opportunities to develop core social skills, build positive relationships and gain confidence. Led by our staff, these groups use engaging activities to explicitly teach positive interactions and connection-building. Examples include the Playmates Kindergarten Program, deck games, chess club, Lego club, drawing club, and games in the sensory room. Our social programs respond to the emerging needs of our students, always centering on inclusion for all.
